Flu Outbreak Worsens – Vaccinations Now More Accessible

Poland is currently facing a serious flu outbreak that’s affecting schools, workplaces, and even training sessions. The flu has spread rapidly across the country, with over 1,000 deaths reported due to complications since September.

Medication Shortages and Low Vaccination Rates

Pharmacies are struggling to keep up with demand—only 15% still have antiviral drugs in stock, compared to 80% in November. Medical experts had already warned about a severe flu season, but with only 5% of the population vaccinated, the situation has become critical.

Pharmacist Daria Wielogórska-Rutka, President of the Lubuskie Chamber of Pharmacists, emphasizes the importance of vaccination as the best preventive measure. Despite having one of the best flu vaccine reimbursement systems in Europe, Poland’s vaccination rate remains dangerously low. Children and seniors can get vaccinated for free, while others pay only 26 PLN—a fraction of the cost of flu medication.

New Vaccination Policy in Pharmacies

Starting on February 14, getting vaccinated will become even easier. Pharmacies will now be authorized to issue discounted flu vaccine prescriptions, reducing the need for a doctor’s visit.

Prevention and Self-Care

To help control the outbreak, senior citizens are advised to avoid crowded places, and anyone experiencing symptoms should stay home to rest and recover. If unsure whether it’s just a cold or the flu, rapid tests can help with diagnosis.

With the flu season still in full swing, taking preventive action now—like getting vaccinated and avoiding unnecessary exposure—is crucial to staying in the game and keeping our communities healthy.
