Planned Sanitary Culling of Over 1,000 Wild Boars in Lubuskie to Combat ASF

I come often across families of wild boars, and even if it’s a scary sight for some, i think it is wholesome to see animals living freely close to us human, that’s why it is sad to hear about animal culling and population reduction.

By the end of June 2025, over 1,000 wild boars will be culled in Lubuskie Province to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF). ASF is a deadly virus for pigs but harmless to humans, causing significant losses in pig farming. The culling is part of an effort to reduce the wild boar population, the primary carriers of the virus. The action was mandated by the Lubuskie voivode’s new regulation in January, with specific culling targets for each district in the region.

The highest numbers of boars will be culled in the Gorzów (187), Międzyrzecz (182), and Zielona Góra (175) districts. The culling also extends to protected areas like the Warta Mouth National Park. During hunts, hunters must search for carcasses and report any findings to veterinary authorities using a dedicated mobile app.

Veterinary services emphasize that culling plays a preventive role alongside biosecurity measures. However, some hunters and environmentalists question the effectiveness of this approach, suggesting that the spread of ASF is more related to human activities and poor biosecurity practices. Despite the declining number of ASF cases in the region, with only four cases reported so far this year, the risk remains high in neighboring provinces such as West Pomerania and Greater Poland.
